When you SUSPECT ABUSE…
Find a comfortable setting for the child.
Wait to have the conversation until you are in that setting.
Ask open ended questions that continue the conversation.
Avoid direct questions about the abuse: “Have you been abused?”
Try asking these questions:
“Is there something you’re worried about?”
“Did something happen that felt inappropriate?”
“Is something bothering you?”
Continue to follow up with the prompt: “Tell me more about that…”
When a Child discloses…
Don’t worry about asking about all the details.
Let them know…
You’re glad they told you
They can always talk to you
You will do all you can to keep them safeAvoid telling them…
They’re to blame
They shouldn’t talk about it
To forget it ever happened
You’re upset or angry
